Japan is an island state in east Asia consisting of more than 3,000 islands. It extends in a northeast/southwest direction for about 2,400 km, forming an arc facing the Asian coast that encloses the Sea of Japan; the other side is lapped by the Pacific Ocean.
The four major islands are, starting from the north, Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu; they have a predominantly mountainous terrain that is home to more than 160 active volcanoes, among which Mount Fuji (the highest in the country at 3,776 mt) dominates. One of the few plains is located in the centre of the coastal region on the Pacific side that houses the capital’s urban settlements.
Various elements influence the country's climate, including its unusual latitudinal range.
