 Prevention

Yellow fever

Yellow fever vaccination is not required.

Hepatitis A and B

Hepatitis A is generally transmitted through contaminated food and water, or through close physical contact with an infected person, while hepatitis B is transmitted through exposure to infected body fluids and blood.

Rabies

Infection typically occurs through contact with the saliva of an infected animal, usually through bites, scratches or licks near open wounds or membranes (mouth, nose, eyes). The most common vectors are dogs and bats, but cases of infection in other domestic animals have also been reported.

Tetanus

Caused by toxins released by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, there is an endemic risk of contracting tetanus throughout the country.

Typhus

Bacterial in origin, typhoid fever is transmitted through contaminated food and drink, especially in regions where sanitation conditions are poor.

Malaria

Malaria, transmitted by mosquito bites, is widespread throughout the country. As a vaccine is not yet available, you are advised to take both behavioural, and following medical consultation, pharmacological preventive measures.

Dengue,  Zika

These diseases are spread by mosquito bites and there is no vaccine. Therefore, it is important to take preventive measures by implementing behavioural prophylaxes.

Insect sting diseases

Chikungunya and West Nile virus are to be found in certain areas of the Caribbean. Transmitted by insect bites and with no vaccine, it is important to take preventive measures with behavioural prophylaxes.

The following vaccinations are strongly recommended as these diseases can be contracted anywhere in the world. Experts advise that you protect yourself and other travellers by making sure you are up-to-date with all of the recommended vaccinations. This will allow you to travel safely, while minimising the risk of exposure to infection.

 Territory and climate

Mexico is a federal state, bordered to the north by the United States, it spreads across the southern part of North America, including a small part of Central America bordered to the southeast by Belize and Guatemala. The eastern and western slopes are bounded by the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean, which to the north seeps into the deep inlet formed by the Lower California Peninsula.

80% of Mexican territory sits at more than 1,000 m above sea level. Longitudinally it is traversed by the Eastern and Western Sierra Madre ranges and along the south coast by the Southern Sierra Madre. The area enclosed by these mountain systems is a plateau that exceeds 2,000 mt in the central area, declining eastward and northward, where at the U.S. border, it takes on an arid, desert-like appearance. The southern part of the country from the Pacific Ocean to the southern part of the Gulf of Mexico is occupied by a volcanic terrain that is among the most extensive in the world, making the country one of the most unstable on earth.

The entire eastern coast is linear and flat until the Yucatan Peninsula, characterised by its low coastline and shallow waters. The west coast is rocky in the southern part and houses several inlets occupied by ports and settlements.

Mexico features a tropical and subtropical climate, although it is greatly influenced by the mountains and their altitude. The temperature range increases proceeding northward and drops as altitude increases according to a clear division previously recognised by Hernán Cortés in 1500.

The country’s tropical belt is invested by the humid air from the Gulf of Mexico; throughout the summer period, heavy rains are generated that can also become disastrous in the form of cyclones, especially on the coastal plains facing the Gulf; the southern and western plains are more sheltered and cyclones have a less violent effect. Winter is the driest season: cold, dry northern winds can arrive on the eastern side, causing frost on the plains and highlands; the central part, on the other hand, is sheltered from the winds by the mountain ranges; as a result, there is little rainfall. Only the area in the far northwest (Tijuana region) receives winter rains.
