Recent scientific studies have shown how the Rotavirus vaccine can also protect against the development of type 1 diabetes.

Rotavirus is a viral infectious disease, usually with oro-fecal transmission, that causes a clinical state of watery diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever. The infection can also cause a severe state of dehydration. Usually the virus is contracted in infancy, which is why vaccination is strongly recommended by the Ministry of Health to all newborns.

While type 2 diabetes is linked to risk factors such as obesity or aging, type 1 diabetes, which is less common, arises at a young age as a result of failure to produce insulin.

Specifically, the study highlights how rotavirus infection promotes the development of type 1 diabetes, although the exact scientific correlation has not yet been proven.

The research was conducted by comparing data in the 8 years before and 8 years after 2007, when the rotavirus vaccine was introduced in a pediatric population.

After the vaccine was adopted, new cases of type 1 diabetes decreased by 14 percent among children up to age 4.

"Although this finding is only a preliminary finding, it is possible that rotavirus vaccination may be one of many protective factors against the development of type 1 diabetes in early childhood," said Dr. Kirsten Perrett of the University of Melbourne in Australia.
