Israel: Update on the war with Hamas

The Israel Defense Forces unleashed devastating airstrikes on the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, flattening entire neighborhoods, and reducing streets and buildings to rubble, as further details emerge about the extent of the atrocities carried out by the Palestinian militants that broke into Israel on 7 October. In terms of airstrikes, PM Netanyahu himself posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, a video showing the extent of the damage. The air campaign is part of the “complete siege” of Gaza, which was announced on Monday, 9 October. The air campaign is likely a precursor to a land operation, which, nevertheless, is uncertain as countries like Egypt, Turkey and Qatar are attempting mediation efforts. However, a land campaign should happen as it would signal to other adversarial actors in the region Israel’s intention to react massively in case of attack. Around 360,000 reservists have been mobilized, which likely signals Israel’s readiness to operate beyond the Gaza Strip if needed. Indeed, limited attacks already took place from both Lebanese and Syrian territories. 28 cities and villages close to the Lebanese border are being evacuated. A key aspect to underline is that Hamas and Islamic Jihad are currently holding up to 200 hostages, primarily Israelis, but also 11 Thai citizens and an unspecified number of Americans. As of this morning, according to GSOC information, the two border crossings into Jordan that were open yesterday, remain open today. Likewise, Ben Gurion, Ramon and Haifa airports remain open, but shrinking numbers of airlines operate flights. The last to announce the suspension of flights was Turkish Airways. However, national evacuation flights are increasing in numbers. Today, Spain will evacuate some of its and EU citizens.
