An orally transmitted disease of viral origin, hepatitis A causes symptoms such as fever, anorexia, nausea and abdominal disorders. Although it rarely reaches the severity of hepatitis B and hepatitis C, it can still be debilitating or cause fulminant hepatitis that is often fatal.

This is one of the most common diseases among travellers. The virus is widespread worldwide and poses a risk particularly in countries where sanitation conditions are poor, although cases are also increasing in industrialised countries.

The vaccine cycle includes 2 doses, the second to be administered ideally between 6 and 12 months after the first. It is possible to postpone the second dose for up to 5 years after the first, but this reduces coverage.

The vaccine is composed of the inactivated, adsorbed virus. Administration is by the intramuscular route.
