The most common vectors are dogs and bats, but cases of infection in other domestic animals have also been reported.

American Samoa is an unincorporated territory of the United States of America. It comprises the eastern section of the archipelago of the same name (while the western area is the territory of the State of Samoa).
The main islands, Tutuila and the Manu'a Islands are volcanic, and the highest peak is Mount Lata at an altitude of 996 metres. While the other islands in the group, Rose Atoll and Swains Islands, are coral atolls.
The climate is tropical, with high temperatures all year round (approx. 30°C) and heavy precipitations, which fall in the rainy season from November to April.
