Yellow fever

Yellow fever vaccination is not required.

Cholera

Cholera is transmitted through infected food and water. Vaccination is especially recommended if you intend to travel to rural areas where it is widespread and access to clean water is limited.

Japanese encephalitis

This viral disease is transmitted by the bite of infected ticks. Vaccination is recommended for prolonged stays in rural regions, particularly between May and October.

Hepatitis A and B

Hepatitis A is usually transmitted by contaminated food and water, or close physical contact with an infected person, whereas Hepatitis B is transmitted by exposure to infected body fluids and blood.

Meningococcus

Meningitis is endemic throughout the country. Pre-travel consultation to evaluate vaccination requirements is strongly recommended.

Rabies

Infection typically occurs through contact with the saliva of an infected animal, usually caused by bites, scratches or licks near open wounds or mucous membranes (e.g. mouth, nose, eyes). The most common vectors are dogs and bats, but cases of infection in other domestic animals have also been reported.

Tetanus

Caused by toxins released by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, the risk of tetanus infection is present throughout the country.

Typhoid Fever

Bacterial in origin, typhoid fever is transmitted through contaminated food and drink, especially in regions where sanitation conditions are poor.

Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis is an airborne disease of bacterial origin. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers at risk of developing severe symptoms or coming into contact with infected individuals. It is also recommended for all travellers under the age of 16 who plan to stay in the country for more than 3 months.

Malaria

Malaria, transmitted by mosquito bites, is widespread, with the highest risk in the period between May and October. As a vaccine is not yet available, you are advised to take both behavioural, and following medical consultation, pharmacological preventive measures. The highest risk regions are the districts of the Chittagong Hills Tract, Chattogram, and Cox's Bazaar. The districts of Hobigonj, Kurigram, Moulvibazar, Mymensingh, Netrakona, Sherpur, Sunamgonj, and Sylhet are low risk. The rest of the country is disease free.

Chikungunya, Dengue, Zika

These diseases are spread by mosquito bites and there is no vaccine. Therefore, it is important to implement careful, preventive behavioural measures.

The following vaccinations are strongly recommended as these diseases can be contracted anywhere in the world. Experts advise that you protect yourself and other travellers by making sure you are up-to-date with all of the recommended vaccinations. This will allow you to travel safely, while minimising the risk of exposure to infection.

 Territory and climate

A southern Asian state, it shares its entire border with India except for a short stretch in the far southeast where it borders Myanmar. It overlooks the Bay of Bengal to the south.

The land is mostly flat, occupied to the south by the vast Ganges-Brahmaputra delta and to the north by the confluence of the two rivers. The hilly ranges of Chittagong sit at the south-eastern end, which rise to more than 600 metres.

The climate is tropical, with average temperatures around 20°C in winter and over 30°C in summer. The monsoon season, from June to September, brings the risk of flooding and cyclones.
