The state of Panama winds through the last part of the narrow Central American isthmic region between the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. It borders Costa Rica to the west and Colombia to the east.
From west to east the territory consists of a series of elevations, some of which, to the west, are volcanic.
