 Prevention

Yellow fever

Yellow fever vaccination is not required.

Rabies

Infection typically occurs through contact with the saliva of an infected animal, usually caused by bites, scratches or licks near open wounds or mucous membranes (e.g. mouth, nose, eyes). The most common vectors are dogs and bats, but cases of infection in other domestic animals have also been reported.

Tetanus

Caused by toxins released by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, the risk of tetanus infection is present throughout the country.

Insect bites and stings

Diseases such as Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever, Leishmaniasis, and West Nile virus are present in Southern Europe. As these diseases are transmitted by insect bites and there are no vaccines, it is important to adopt careful behavioural and preventive measures.

The following vaccinations are strongly recommended as these diseases can be contracted anywhere in the world. Experts advise that you protect yourself and other travellers by making sure you are up-to-date with all of the recommended vaccinations. This will allow you to travel safely, while minimising the risk of exposure to infection.

 Territory and climate

Portugal occupies the western point of the Iberian Peninsula, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean for approximately 850 km. Its territory also includes two archipelagos located in the Atlantic Ocean: the Azores (1,360 km from the European coast) and Madeira (545 km northwest of the Moroccan coast).

The climate is strongly influenced by the country’s geographical location. In summer, the high pressure of the Azores anticyclone warms the air, creating steady conditions that bring mild weather and low humidity, with a gradual rise in temperatures towards the south of the country. In autumn and early spring, rainfall is heavy and the weather is unpredictable.

In terms of heat, the coastal region benefits from the influence of the ocean. In January, for example, temperatures average 9°C to 12°C; however, as you move further inland, towards the Meseta Central plateau in the east and the mountainous region to the north, the temperature decreases.
