 Prevention

Yellow fever

Yellow fever vaccination is not required.

Hepatitis A and B

Hepatitis A is generally transmitted through contaminated food and water, or through close physical contact with an infected person, while Hepatitis B is transmitted through exposure to infected body fluids and blood.

Polio

Poliomyelitis is typically transmitted through infected water and food and is caused by three types of polio viruses. Infections caused by one type do not protect against the others.

Rabies

Infection typically occurs through contact with the saliva of an infected animal, usually by bites, scratches or licks near open wounds or membranes (mouth, nose, eyes). The most common vectors are dogs and bats, but cases of infection in other domestic animals have also been reported.

Tetanus

Caused by toxins released by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, the risk of contracting tetanus is endemic throughout the country.

Typhoid Fever

Bacterial in origin, typhoid fever is transmitted through contaminated food and drink, especially in regions where sanitation conditions are poor.

Insect bites and stings

Diseases such as Chikungunya, Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever, Rift Valley Fever are found in West Asia. Transmitted by insect bites and with no vaccine, it is important to implement careful, preventive behavioural measures.

The following vaccinations are strongly recommended as these diseases can be contracted anywhere in the world. Experts advise that you protect yourself and other travellers by making sure you are up-to-date with all of the recommended vaccinations. This will allow you to travel safely, while minimising the risk of exposure to infection.

 Territory and climate

The state of Israel is bordered on the north by Lebanon, the east by Syria and Jordan, and the southwest by Egypt; the entire western side faces the Mediterranean Sea.

The territory has a varied morphological formation: the coastal plain stretches along the coast for more than 200 km, with a linear and sandy shoreline, housing the country's main urban centres. A little further east is the highland area, which thins into a long depression traversed by the Jordan River and occupied for a small part by the Dead Sea and Lake Tiberias. Finally, the southern belt features a steppe-desert landscape.

The climate is Mediterranean along the coastal strip, with mild, rainy winters and warm, sunny summers. The inland areas, by contrast, have a continental and decidedly more arid climate; winters are mostly mild but occasional snowfall generated by cold air masses from Russia is possible; summers are hot with increasing temperatures moving south.
