 Prevention

Yellow fever

Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for all travelers over 1 year old from at-risk countries or who have transited for more than 12 hours at airports in at-risk countries.

Meningococcal ACYW

All travelers over the age of 2 arriving for Umrah, Hajj or for seasonal work along the Hajj route must present the certificate of quadrivalent vaccination carried out no less than 10 days prior to entry into the country.

Poliomyelitis

Polio vaccination is mandatory for all travelers arriving from countries with active transmission or at risk of reintroduction.

Malaria

Malaria, transmitted by mosquito bites, poses a moderate risk in the southwestern provinces (Jizan, Asir, Najran) below 2,000 metres. As a vaccine is not yet available, you are advised to take both behavioural and, following medical consultation, pharmacological preventive measures.

Dengue Fever

Dengue outbreaks have been reported in Madinah, Jizan and Makkah Provinces (including Jeddah and Mecca). This disease is spread by mosquito bites and there is no vaccine. Therefore, it is important to implement careful preventive behavioural measures.

MERS

Cases of MERS-Cov have been reported within the country. Since there is no vaccine, careful preventive behavioural measures are recommended. It is especially advisable to avoid contact with camels or consuming raw camel milk or meat products.

The following vaccinations are strongly recommended as these diseases can be contracted anywhere in the world. Experts advise that you protect yourself and other travellers by making sure you are up-to-date with all of the recommended vaccinations. This will allow you to travel safely, while minimising the risk of exposure to infection.

 Territory and climate

Saudi Arabia is the largest state in the Arabian Peninsula and is bordered by Jordan, Iraq, and Kuwait to the north, with Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman to the southeast, Yemen to the south, and facing the Red Sea to the west with the Persian Gulf to the northeast.

The territory consists of a vast plateau, hemmed in to the west and southwest by high mountain ranges that slope steeply, with gorges and ravines, toward the thin coastal plain overlooking the Red Sea, while to the east it heads toward the Persian Gulf with rocky or sandy deserts.

Apart from the mountainous areas in the southwest, which are cooler and more verdant, the climate is arid along the coasts and desert in the interior. The entire peninsula is one of the hottest areas in the world, and rainfall, which is always very scarce, often non-existent for years, especially in the ar-Rub al-Khali, the southern region that forms the main part of the Arabian Desert and the largest sandy desert in the world.
